OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PROGRAM AT TDLC
Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people of all ages participate in the activities they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). Common occupational therapy interventions at TDLC focus on helping children with disabilities to increase their participation in home, school, and social situations.
Occupational therapy services typically include:
An individualized evaluation, during which the client/family and occupational therapist determine the children’s goals.
Customized intervention to improve the person’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals.
Ongoing evaluations to ensure that the goals are being met and/or make changes to the intervention plan.
BENEFITS OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
Your child may benefit from occupational therapy if they have difficulty performing their play, education, self-care, or life functions. Some examples of areas that may be addressed include:
- Self-care skills – dressing, self-feeding, personal hygiene and grooming
- Fine motor development – handwriting, grasping, cutting, shoe tying, in-hand manipulation, fine motor dexterity and coordination
- Gross motor development – improve motor planning, eye-hand coordination, strength, endurance and balance
- Play exploration and participation – pretend play, games with rules, constructive play, play skills with peers
- Safety and body awareness – following directions and improving attention
- Sensory processing and regulation
TDLC’S OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS
Tangible Difference Learning Center’s OT program provides the unique opportunity for collaboration among groups of therapists. We provide a variety of different therapies all in one place, including applied behavior analysis (ABA), social skills classes and speech therapy. Skills that are being acquired during the OT sessions can also be carried over into our speech, social skills, or ABA sessions, and vice versa. Therapists will maintain close communication with the parent or caregiver, discussing progress and any home-programs recommended for facilitating the carry-over of new skills. We pride ourselves on providing all-in-one, comprehensive, and quality treatment for our clients!
Our occupational therapy program has the unique ability to address behaviors and other issues that may interfere with the therapeutic learning process, thus helping maximize therapy benefits for each child. Our in-depth experience, with children with autism, allows us to understand how to best provide occupational therapy services to individuals on the Spectrum and help overcome difficulties they may encounter.
Although TDLC specializes in treating children on the Autism Spectrum, our occupational therapy team also has experience and are equipped to treat many diagnoses. Some of these diagnoses include:
- Cerebral Palsy
- Developmental Delays
- Down Syndrome/ SOTO Syndrome and other Genetic Disorders
- Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Other Neurodevelopmental and Neuromuscular disorders
- Sensory Processing Disorder
HOW TO GET STARTED WITH OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
If you are interested in occupational therapy services or have any questions, give us a call or send us an email to set up an appointment for an OT evaluation. Our Occupational Therapists will conduct an evaluation to determine the need, nature, and/or severity of your child’s concerns. Upon completion, the evaluation will be explained to the parent, including recommendations for therapy and at-home practice.
